A graduate of Yale University, Bechet taught at several institutions including Delgado Community College and Southern University at New Orleans before becoming professor of art at Xavier University of Louisiana. He has taught at XULA since 1998.

Trees and nature are common themes in Bechet’s work. He stumps audiences—uses the tools of his trade to blur the lines between reality and illusion. Viewers of Bechet’s work are forced draw on their own sense of intrigue and conclusions about the world he has drawn them into. Bechet emphasizes that one aspect of his work “is inspired by his experiences and observations of the consequences of forces of nature and time on place and the human experience.”
