What to Expect

If you are a teacher and would like to plan a visit to the Amistad Research Center for your class, we require that you contact our staff to make arrangements prior to your visit, preferably 2-3 weeks prior. Class visits can include a general introduction to the Center and its holdings, or we can help you design a research or document-based exercise that will allow students to research and analyze materials from our collections. Space is limited and we can typically accommodate 25 students for general tours. Smaller classes (10-15) are preferred for research visits.

If you are a student, we encourage you to speak with our staff prior to your visit so that we can assist you in identifying materials relevant to your topic. We are happy to help students and we can advise you on the materials you may not have found on our website. Some materials are stored at an offsite facility and may need to be retrieved prior to your visit. Our staff can assist with identifying these items and make arrangements for them to be brought to the Center for your use.

What to Expect

During your visit, you can access a wide range of resources including manuscripts, rare books, photographs, and digital archives.

We also feature rotating exhibitions that highlight significant moments and figures in Black history and culture. Our knowledgeable staff is available to assist with research inquiries and provide guided tours.

Research Appointments

Q.
What are your research hours?

The Amistad Research Center requires appointments for researchers. Our hours are:

  • Monday-Tuesday & Thursday-Friday: 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM
  • Wednesday: 10:00 AM - 7:00 PM
  • Saturday: 10:00 AM - 2:00 PM
Q.
Why do I need an appointment?

Appointments ensure a productive research experience. Here's why:

  • Offsite Collections: Many of our valuable archives are stored offsite. Scheduling a research appointment allows us to retrieve materials in advance for your visit.

Scheduling is easy! To schedule your research appointment, call the reference desk at (504-862-3217) or email us at reference@amistadresearchcenter.org. Be sure to mention your preferred date, group size, and any areas of particular interest. We'll work with you to find a suitable time and create a rewarding visit.
