A graduate of Oklahoma Christian College (1964), Asante also received a Master of Arts from Pepperdine University and a Ph.D. from the University of California at Los Angeles (UCLA).

Asante is a renowned author and scholar who has authored and co-edited several publications with noted scholars such as Maulana Karegna and Cheikh Anta Diop. His most seminal works include The Dramatic Genius of Charles Fuller and Erasing Racism: The Survival of the American Nation.

A visual artist as well, during the mid-1990’s Asante participated in a scholarly lecture series at the Amistad Research Center. Three of Asante’s artworks, taken from his manuscript collection at the Center, were exhibited during his visit.
