She is well-known for her mastery as a collagist who expertly blends materials to form powerful thought provoking images that stir her audiences’ consciousness.
Goldweights is symbolic. The adorns the deck of the ship with gold painted clothes pins that are paradoxically placed in neatly lined and orderly rows. Conversely the scattering of human cargo in the bowels of ships that made the Transatlantic Slave Passage. Many of the captives found themselves in situations where they were bereft with chaos and angst-- often paired with members of cultural and linguistically opposing tribal factions—who were challenged to communicate their suffering.
The first public showing of Foster’s work was in 1951 at the Nora Narva Library on Saint Bernard Avenue in New Orleans. In the more than fifty years since that time, Foster has amassed a significant following. Her work is much sought after by collectors. Foster, also an educator, taught for over 30 years. In the early 1960’s she taught at McDonough No. 36 in New Orleans before moving to the Philippines. Foster also taught at McDonough No. 11 and the Dunbar Elementary School.
Foster who was once voted teacher of the year, retired after thirty-six years of teaching and dedicated herself to pursuing her life-long passion as an artist. The artist once remarked that “I used to watch my father make wooden objects downstairs in the garage and my Uncle Minos whittling figures and plaques.” “My mother and I painted scenes with acrylics on small canvas boards and my neighbor, Wendell Crowley, painted large pastel portraits of his family. I was surrounded by people who were self-taught artists.”
Foster’s work has been exhibited by several institutions from Louisiana to France. An avid genealogical researcher, she also draws inspiration from her maternal family lines. Through DNA testing, Foster, found that she has ties to the Songhai people of Niger, Africa
