PARKING
The Amistad Research Center is primarily a research institution and not a museum facility. We welcome groups interested in touring the Reading Room and Exhibition Gallery during our regular hours. Tours are free and include: a welcome, general description of the Amistad Research Center, a brief explanation of the Amistad Event, a discussion of Amistad's holdings, and an introduction to material currently on display in the Exhibition Gallery. Please note:
To schedule a tour of the Amistad Research Center, contact the Reference Desk at (504) 862-3222. When scheduling please indicate your need for any assistance for individuals with disabilities. Tours are usually 30-45 minutes in length.
GROUP TOURS
All tours of Amistad must be scheduled in advance with at least two (2) weeks notice and can accommodate up to twenty-five (25) individuals during a visit. Scheduled tours over 30 minutes late may not be accommodated.
Amistad's Reading Room offers seating for 12. If there are any members of your group who cannot stand for a 15-minute period, let the Center know ahead of time how many people will need chairs.
For school field trips, teachers and group coordinators are required to provide chaperones for every student group, with one chaperone per ten students. Please provide advance notice to Amistad if your school field trip has a specific area of interest.
If you have a large group of twenty-six (26) or more individuals in the New Orleans area, please email the Reference Desk about the possibility of an Amistad staff member coming out to speak to your group.
