Introduction
The Amistad Research Center has over 250,000 photographs
that document various aspects of ethnic history. Most
of these photographs can be found in the manuscript collections
at the Center. They are not stored separately. The Center
does have some collections that consist mainly of photographs.
Researching
Photographs
The reference staff can help researchers determine which
collections are most likely to contain photographs of
a particular subject, but the staff cannot spend more
than i hour searching for photographs.
A visit to the Center is necessary
for in-depth photograph research, such as for documentary
production.
An appointment for photo research
is necessary to allow the reference staff time to do
preliminary searching on your research topic. To make
an appointment, please contact the Reference Department
at research@amistadresearchcenter.org
or call 504-862-3222.
Photograph Duplication
The Center has physical ownership of its photographs,
but in most cases does not hold the copyright. It is
the researcher's responsibility to obtain permission
for publication from the copyright holder.
Researchers must request permission
from the Amistad Research Center in order to publish
an image the Center owns, however this permission is
not a substitute for permission from the copyright owner.
In order to reproduce a photograph,
the researcher must fill out a Photograph
Request Form
and submit it to the Reference Department.
Amistad requires 3-6 weeks to process
a photograph request, depending upon the number of photographs
and the time it will take to locate them.
The Center does not provide
scanning services or rush orders at this time.
